Wii U vs PS3: Which Console Has Better Exclusives?

Compare the exclusive game libraries of the Wii U and PS3 to decide which retro console fits your gaming style. We break down the trade-offs.

Quick Answer

For a curated library of innovative, family-friendly exclusives, the Wii U wins; for a vast, diverse catalog of cinematic single-player games, the PS3 is the better choice.

Exclusive Libraries: Quality vs. Quantity

The PS3's exclusive lineup is massive, spanning genres from action-adventure to RPGs, with heavy hitters like Uncharted, The Last of Us, and God of War. It's a treasure trove for players who crave deep narratives and mature themes.

The Wii U, despite a shorter lifespan, packed a punch with innovative titles like Super Mario 3D World, Splatoon, and Bayonetta 2. Its exclusives often emphasize gameplay creativity and local multiplayer, making it a party favorite.

The trade-off is clear: PS3 offers more variety and quantity, while Wii U delivers high-quality, unique experiences you can't find elsewhere.

Hardware and Backward Compatibility Quirks

The PS3's Cell processor made it notoriously difficult to develop for, leading to some multi-platform games performing worse than on Xbox 360. But first-party exclusives were often optimized to showcase the hardware.

The Wii U's GamePad is a double-edged sword: it enables asymmetric gameplay and off-TV play, but some players find it cumbersome, and not all games use it meaningfully.

Neither console has perfect backward compatibility. The PS3's original models could play PS2 games, but later models dropped that feature. The Wii U can play most Wii games, which is a plus for retro enthusiasts.

Decision Guide: Wii U vs PS3

For the largest exclusive library: Choose the PS3. You'll have access to hundreds of exclusives across every genre, from action to RPGs. Check if the specific games you want are available as pre-owned discs to save money.
For innovative, family-friendly exclusives: Choose the Wii U. Its exclusives are more focused on creative mechanics and local multiplayer fun. Make sure the GamePad is included with your console purchase, as it's essential for many games.
For backward compatibility: The Wii U plays Wii discs, while only early PS3 models play PS2 games. If you have a Wii collection, the Wii U is more versatile. Verify the specific PS3 model's compatibility before buying if you plan to play PS2 games.
